There are few watches as iconic as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Often known as the ultimate luxury sports watch, it combines haute horology with everyday wearability.
 
Created by watch designer, Gérald Genta, in 1972, the Royal Oak wasn’t an immediate hit. Its octagonal bezel, tapisserie dial and integrated bracelet weren’t like anything else on the market and a long stretch from a classic Patek Philippe Calatrava or uncomplicated Rolex Submariner. Yet, with some clever marketing, it soon became a firm favourite among watch collectors.

50 years on, and with over 500 variations, the Royal Oak is as popular as it’s ever been. In more recent years, we’ve seen some enthusiasts swap out their 44mm Off Shores for something a little smaller on the wrist, and that’s why this reference 15000ST is one of my favourites.

The slim case fits well on the wrist, yet that iconic bezel and bracelet design means that the watch still has a real presence.
 
This piece, thought to be from 2000, features a grande tapisserie dial – a miniature pyramid design that catches the light. However, this particular dial has naturally discoloured over time, creating this beautiful “tropical” brown colour.
 
Powering the watch is an automatic calibre 2140 movement, based on Jaeger-LeCoultre 960. The movement is running well, having recently undergone a full service, and as such we’re pleased to supply the watch with a 12-month warranty.
 
The case is predominately brushed with some polished edges and is in an excellent condition. The original bracelet is showing evidence of wear, however there is an option to have a custom-made strap fitted if you wish to preserve the bracelet.
 
Overall, this iconic watch is not only an important piece in the history of watch design, but extremely comfortable to wear, and very charming too!
